As a legacy from the 20th century, we inherited many original “styles” of glasses, which have by no means lost their attractiveness to this day. Each of them has not only its own name, but also its own history. We meticulously collect all these stories and today we want to introduce you to those that relate to the most important forms from the point of view of eyewear design.

- "Wayfarer"
- "The Lennons"
- "Cat's eye" and "butterfly"

"Aviator"
“Aviator” is perhaps the most important and most recognizable model of sunglasses of all time. For many decades now, it has been occupying the first lines of the eyewear chart, not allowing itself to be supplanted by any other for a long time. The first to appreciate the advantages of “aviators” with characteristic teardrop-shaped lenses (then gray-green) were the pilots of the US Air Force, for whom the “aviators” were, in fact, developed. And this happened in the 1930s. However, “aviators”, providing maximum visibility and transmitting a minimum of scattered light, did not remain the exclusive property of the US Air Force for long. They attracted public attention immediately after photographs of the courageous American Army General Douglas MacArthur appeared in the press, depicted in “aviators” on one of the Philippine islands during World War II. However, the great glory of the “aviators” at that time was still ahead. It hit them like an avalanche in 1969, after the American film “Easy Rider” with Peter Fonda was released, thanks to which glasses with drop lenses became a symbol of unisex style and acquired cult status. In the 1980s, the maintenance of this status was facilitated by the release of the American film Top Gun, in which Tom Cruise appeared in the aviators.
How to choose glasses frames based on your skin tone
To make your look completely complete and harmonious, it would be a good idea to find out which frame color will perfectly harmonize with your skin type:
- For dark skin, it is recommended to choose frames in warm colors: red, tortoiseshell, copper, coral, creamy, peach, golden, honey, orange, khaki, beige;
- Pale skin is suitable for frames in cool colors: white, amethyst, steel, purple, pale pink, gray, blue, plum, silver, jade, anthracite;
- To revitalize aging skin, older people can recommend frames in red and purple shades.
Only by taking into account all these recommendations can you hope that glasses will not become an inferiority complex for you, but a stylish and desirable accessory that emphasizes your individuality.
"Wayfarer"
The first wayfarers - sunglasses with trapezoidal lenses, which later became the golden classics of eyewear fashion - were introduced to the market in 1952. Of the current options, the closest to the original version is the RB 2140 model from the Ray-Ban brand, under which “wayfarers” were actually born. When viewers saw the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's in 1961, starring Audrey Hepburn, wayfarer sunglasses instantly became popular. In general, any Hollywood star could envy the Wayfarers in terms of success in cinema. During their “film career,” they “starred” in more than a hundred films, including the legendary film “The Blues Brothers,” which was released in 1980. Black sunscreen "Wayfarers" appeared in this film from the first to the last scene. The main characters, played by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, did not part with them even at night, considering them an essential accessory. It seems that after watching the film, many viewers believed in this: sales of “Wayfarers” skyrocketed again in the eighties.
How to choose the right glasses frame for your eye color
To make glasses pleasing to the eye, you need to know how to choose the frame of the glasses and the color of your eyes, because the color scheme is also involved in creating a stylish look. Even if the glasses are in harmony with your oval face, but the color does not suit your eyes at all, consider it a failure.
- — Green-eyed beauties are recommended to choose frames in green, orange and burgundy (dark red with a purple tint) colors.;
- For brown-eyed people, it’s better to opt for lilac, tortoiseshell (black and red), red or coffee frames;
- Those with hazel eyes can recommend emerald-colored frames.;
- Gray and blue eyes will harmonize with brown, dark blue, and steel frames.
If you consider these tips for choosing frames, you will be surprised at how beautiful and stylish your glasses will look on your face.
"The Lennons"
Today it is customary to call “Lennons” small metal glasses with round light openings. As you might guess, they owe their name to John Lennon, one of the most famous users of round glasses in their entire history. In the 60s and 70s of the last century, imitating their idol, many young people aspired to have something similar. Lennon's glasses, by the way, were nickel-plated. However, today, when we talk about Lennons, we primarily mean their shape, not their material (so those who suffer from nickel allergies can breathe easy). After the leader of the Fab Four, who urged people to make love rather than war, was killed in 1980, round glasses became a symbol of peace and the hippie movement. The controversial musician Ozzy Osbourne, who also turned out to be partial to round glasses, cannot be classified as a “flower child,” of course, but it should be noted that thanks to him, round glasses also became the property of the underground, whose representatives call glasses a la Osbourne “ Ozzie." However, for those whose childhood was in the 1990s, “Lennons” are by no means associated with the musicians mentioned above, but rather with the young wizard Harry Potter. This character is largely responsible for the fact that round glasses have become very popular among bespectacled teenagers, who finally stopped feeling like outsiders.
Plastic spectacle frames
Plastic spectacle frames are very common due to the fact that they have a number of positive properties: they are light and durable, and retain their consumer properties for a long time. Modern plastics can be used to make eyeglass frames in a wide variety of colors and shapes.
Cellulose acetate
One of the most common plastics used to make eyeglass frames is cellulose acetate (chemically obtained from cotton). Cellulose acetate spectacle frames (also called ZYL ) are quite cheap, and at the same time, their rich range of colors gives designers unlimited possibilities to realize their fantasies.
The material is light, quite durable, resistant to mechanical stress at normal temperatures, and easy to process. Unfortunately, cellulose acetate spectacle frames in areas of contact with the face (nose pads and temples) gradually become discolored under the influence of sweat. In addition, cellulose acetate is susceptible to common household chemicals, including acetone.
Despite the noted disadvantages, cellulose acetate spectacle frames are in great demand, especially frames made by milling from solid sheets consisting of multi-colored layers or layers with varying degrees of transparency.
Grilamid (Grilamid)
Grilamid is a modern polymer obtained from polyamide 12 . Grilamid has a wide range of industrial applications, from telephone wires to windshields, sausage casings to sunglasses. It is used for sunglasses due to its high resistance to high temperatures - glasses made from Grilamid can be safely left on the dashboard of a car on a hot day. In addition, the polymer has high impact resistance, flexibility, and low weight. It is also UV resistant and retains its shape well. Grilamid is produced by the Swiss company EMS-Grivory.
Hyrdalon (Girdalon)
Hyrdalon is a brand of nylon used by Bollé to make eyeglass frames. The material is flexible and elastic.
Nylon/Polyamides
Nylon is a synthetic polymer made from polyamides. In the early 40s, women's stockings began to be made from it. Today, nylon is widely used in industry: it is used to make parachutes, umbrellas, tires and much more.
Spectacle frames made of nylon appeared in the 40s of the last century. But the first pure nylon spectacle frames had a very soft surface. Today, nylon eyeglass frames are made not from pure polyamide, but from polymers obtained either from a mixture of different polyamides, or from a mixture of polyamides with other components (polymers of this group are also called polyamides, copolyamides and grilamides).
Modern spectacle frames made of nylon (polyamide) are very light and durable. They are very difficult to break, which is why these materials are often used to make sports glasses and fashionable, form-fitting eyeglass frames. Nylon spectacle frames are resistant to high and low temperatures (do not change their shape), as well as scratches.
However, they are easier to break than metal eyeglass frames. In addition, when exposed to sunlight, nylon spectacle frames gradually age, becoming more fragile.
Spectacle frames made of nylon and polyamides are also considered hypoallergenic (rarely cause allergic reactions). There is a wide selection of spectacle frames made from nylon and polyamides in various colors on the market.
Propionates
This type of polymer is similar in properties to cellulose acetate. Parts for propionate frames (frame, temples) are produced by injection molding. Propionates are used by some manufacturers to make lightweight hypoallergenic eyeglass frames. Propionate spectacle frames are stronger, more flexible and lighter than cellulose acetate spectacle frames.
Carbon fiber
Carbon fiber (carbon fiber, carbon ) is a new composite material consisting of carbon fibers, which are interconnected by epoxy resins and/or other polymers (polyester, nylon, kelvar). The carbon fibers that form the basis of the material are very resistant to stretching, i.e. They are very difficult to tear or stretch (they are as strong as steel). However, when compressed, they are not as strong as when stretched and break quite easily. To increase strength, carbon fibers are intertwined with each other at a certain angle and polymer fibers and epoxy resins are added to them. Carbon is 40% lighter than steel and 20% lighter than aluminum, and is as strong as most metals. In addition, carbon products look very beautiful and modern. Thanks to its outstanding properties, carbon is today used in various fields of human activity: in motorsport (for car parts and racing equipment), in military technologies (weapons, special uniforms, etc.), in skiing (skis, ski poles, helmets), and every day the scope of carbon fiber is increasing. Carbon fiber is now used in high-tech, expensive eyeglass frames (eg TAG Heuer by LOGO and Ray-Ban by Luxottica).
Kevlar
If you need a frame that has increased resistance to impact loads, then you should choose a frame made of Kevlar . Created by DuPont in 1965, the plastic is often used in body armor, sports equipment and motorcycle helmets to protect against extreme impacts.
Optyl
Optyl is an epoxy polymer (belongs to the class of heat-resistant polymers), which bears the name of the company that was the first to use it for the production of eyeglass frames. Optyl was invented and patented in 1964 by Optyl/Carrera Corporation founder Wilhelm Anger. Optyl is currently used by Safilo for its eyewear (Carrera was acquired by Safilo in 1996). Optyl is an innovative polymer that does not cause allergies, is very lightweight (frames made from it are lighter than those made from cellulose acetate), and is resistant to corrosion, sweat and cosmetics. Optyl is also more resistant to mechanical stress compared to other heat-resistant polymers (acetate, propionates, etc.).
However, its main feature is that it has a “memory effect”. Optyl has a fairly high melting point - about 83 degrees. If an Optyl frame has changed its shape under the influence of external forces, it can be reheated, and the original (“factory” shape) will itself be restored (this is the “memory” effect). For the production of Optyl, the “vacuum cast” technology is used, which allows the use of 3D design and unique bright color effects.
SPX
SPX (Silhouette Polyamide X) is a proprietary polymer (polyamide) of the Silhouette company, used by it since 1982, mainly for its Adidas Eyewear and Daniel Swarovski collections.
SPX is a high-tech material from the group of polyamides, whose outstanding properties make it an almost ideal material for the production of eyeglass frames. SPX is characterized by flexibility, elasticity, high surface scratch resistance, long service life, and lightness (1.04 g/cm3). In addition, it retains its shape well, is resistant to temperature changes and is hypoallergenic.
"Cat's eye" and "butterfly"
Cat-eye glasses, which we are deeply convinced are the most feminine ever, appeared on the market in the 1950s. There is an opinion that this “style” was invented by Christian Dior himself. Allegedly, a fashion model – half Kazakh, half Russian – worked in his fashion house for a long time. And Dior created a cat-eye shape to highlight the contours of her slanted eyes. In our opinion, this is nothing more than a beautiful legend; at least we do not have factual confirmation of it. But we can well say that the most famous in the 1950s was the American company Tura***. This fact, in particular, is pointed out by the authors of the book “For Your Eyes Only?” published in 2007. Glasses from A to Z” - journalists Alessandra Albarello and Francesca Joppolo ****, who, working for professional optical publications, devoted more than a year to studying the history of glasses. One of the most famous cat-eye glasses, evoking associations with the era of the fifties, are perhaps those worn by the heroine Marilyn Monroe in the film How to Marry a Millionaire, which was released in 1953 Recalling the glasses of Paula, Monroe’s on-screen heroine, some readers will think that the model’s shape is more like a “butterfly” than a “cat’s eye.” Here are the glasses of the heroine Anouk Aimee in Federico Fellini’s film “The Sweet Life” (La Dolce Vita; 1959) - these are a real “cat’s eye”! Indeed, there is sometimes confusion with the “cat eye” and “butterfly”, which can be explained by the fact that many believe that these are two completely different forms of glasses. Arguing their point of view, supporters of this theory say that “cat eye” glasses repeat the shape of the eyes of a “domestic predator”, their corners sharply rush upward, while glasses of the “butterfly” model, respectively, resemble the open wings of a butterfly, differing larger frame area and less rapid “character”. In theory, this explanation seems quite logical, but in practice, given the wide variety of frame solutions, the division sometimes raises questions, so we still would not strictly adhere to it. The concepts “cat's eye” and “butterfly” quite often act as synonyms, which we often see when reading press releases
Panto-shaped glasses (translated from Greek panto means “everything” or “whole”) are glasses that provide the user with full vision. They owe this advantage to their shape: the lower part of the rim is absolutely round, and the upper line is straighter. Their upper border runs just below the eyebrows, which is not only aesthetically attractive, but also practical: eyebrows do not stain the lenses. Glasses of this shape appeared on the market in the 30s of the 20th century and were immediately loved by many intellectuals. With the beginning of World War II, they were, however, conveniently forgotten (whatever one may say, it is still more convenient to shoot from trenches with glasses with large round light apertures), but with the onset of peacetime they were remembered again. In the 1950s and 60s, pantos enjoyed a reputation as perhaps the most popular men's eyewear model in the United States. In the 1980s, the fashion world once again warmed up to the panto form, whose fans were director Woody Allen and actor Johnny Depp - frankly, extraordinary people.

Not long ago we told you about some models of sunglasses, namely aviators, cat eyes and brownliners. Today we will continue this topic and look at three more frame shapes: Wayfarers, Grands and Tishades. Also, don’t forget to watch the video on how to choose the right glasses from image maker-stylist Svetlana Zaitseva.
Wayfarers are one of the most popular glasses models. Translated from English, wayfarer means wanderer, traveler, and these glasses have really traveled a lot. After all, this model has become popular all over the world. What's special about them?
Wayfarer glasses have a trapezoidal shape and a plastic frame.
The Wayfarer glasses model was invented in 1952 by Raymond Stegman, co-owner of the famous ]Ray Ban[/anchor]. These glasses were distinguished by their revolutionary idea, because the frame was made of plastic, and the lenses themselves were trapezoidal (the upper part is larger than the lower part), but rounded. Wayfarers quickly became a popular model of glasses; they managed to “shine up” in many films. In addition, celebrities have repeatedly appeared in public wearing such glasses.
The big plus of the wayfarera model is that this model is unisex. That is, they are equally suitable for both men and women. Moreover, their universal shape makes these glasses an excellent addition to any look. In addition, from a wide variety of frames, colored lenses and sizes, everyone can find their ideal wayfarera glasses.
Wayfarers will complement any look
Round glasses with thin wire frames are tishades . You can also find other names for this model - “granny glasses”, “blind glasses”, “bicycles”. It was the teeshades that became the hallmark of hippies in the 60s. Since then, they have gone out of fashion and become popular again.
Round glasses – quiet shades
Tishades are rightfully considered the oldest form of glasses, since the first corrective glasses were of this shape. Very often, it is in quietades that we imagine smart people and nerds, teachers and professors. And the film industry and celebrities cannot ignore these glasses.
Unlike other glasses models, quiet shades require careful design. Not only are these glasses not suitable for everyone, but they are also selected for a specific outfit, and not vice versa. Tishades are absolutely not suitable for people with a round face, but they will look perfect on a long face.
Tishades require a carefully thought-out image
In addition, the same “granny glasses” will look different depending on the style of clothing. For example, quiet people do not accept sporty and romantic styles. In general, their rightful place is in creative images, thought out to the smallest detail.
Grand glasses have huge lenses and plastic frames. These glasses perfectly cover your face not only from the sun, but also from prying eyes. It's no surprise that this model is still very popular.
Glasses - grandees will hide not only from the sun, but also from prying eyes
Grands are one of the few glasses models that were accessible and inexpensive. They were made from cheap materials and were much more attractive than wayfarers or aviators. The exact date of appearance of the grand model is unknown, but they gained their popularity thanks to Jacqueline Kennedy and Elton John.
Jacqueline Kennedy made the grandee a popular model
Grands look great on any type of face, go well with different styles, which is why they remain popular today. A wide variety of frame and lens colors and glasses sizes make them a universal model for any woman.

"Dragonfly"
Huge, like the eyes of a dragonfly, round-shaped sunglasses gained popularity in the late 60s and early 70s of the last century. The prerequisite for their appearance was the promotion of polymer lenses to the market - much lighter than those made of mineral glass. One of the main fans of “oversized” glasses of that time was the widow of US President John F. Kennedy, the wife of Greek billionaire Aristotle Onassis, Jackie Onassis, rightfully considered one of the most elegant women of the 20th century. During her trips to Capri, Jackie never parted with her “dragonflies,” created personally for her by Parisian optician Robert Pinton***** from cellulose acetate plastic and natural tortoiseshell. Soon after Jackie Onassis appeared in society wearing dragonflies, glasses of a similar shape entered the collections of many manufacturers, making it much easier for girls to look like Jackie.
Composite frames
Aluminum glasses frames |
In the manufacture of many branded eyeglass frames, such as Cerruti frames, modern composite materials, in particular carbon, are used. In terms of strength, this material is in no way inferior to steel.
Composite frames are even 20% lighter than ultra-light aluminum and look very elegant, and their high strength is due to the unique manufacturing technology of spectacle frames. Carbon fibers with polymers and epoxy resins added to them are intertwined, which allows the material to achieve maximum strength. In addition, frames made of composite materials can be easily adjusted if they are too small or too big for you: to do this, just heat them up, adjust them, and then cool them.
Making the right choice given the modern diversity in the optics market is quite difficult, however, when purchasing metal or plastic frames for glasses in the StilOptic online store, it is almost impossible to make a mistake: the site presents only high-quality frames from the world's leading manufacturers, harmoniously combining functionality, practicality and stylish design.
"Clubmaster"
“Clubmasters”, or “brow-liners”, as they are also called, are glasses in a combined frame with rounded light openings. The upper part of the “clubmasters” is reinforced with plastic “arcs”, creating the effect of double eyebrows. The fashion for “clubmasters” came to Europe from America. One of their most famous users of the mid-20th century was the fighter for the rights of blacks Malcolm X, who had several glasses of this “style” in different colors. With the advent of the plastic revolution, thanks to which the market was flooded with new models, the attractiveness of the “clubmasters” somehow faded. In the eighties, they returned to the fashion scene again, but only as sunglasses, but at the beginning of this decade, due to designers' passion for retro style, they experienced a real renaissance.
Material selection
But the material of the frame for correction is not so important, so you are free in your choice. Let's take a quick look at the pros and cons of the most popular frame materials.
Metal models are made in a classic style with a minimum of decor. This option is perfect for men whose wardrobe is dominated by business suits. The color palette of metal frames is restrained and monochromatic. The advantages include the lightness and reliability of the design. An excellent choice for those looking for a traditional solution.
When choosing a material, be guided by your own preferences
If you want something more original, pay attention to plastic models. They are less conservative, more often have a bright color and an original shape. Another important advantage is that plastic frames are hypoallergenic. But metal ones can cause an allergic reaction on the skin, with the exception of titanium frames.
"Lolita"
The name "Lolita" was attached to the glasses, made in the shape of two hearts, shortly after Stanley Kubrick's film "Lolita" based on the novel of the same name by Vladimir Nabokov was released in 1962.
It is interesting that Lolita did not wear glasses either in the film or in the book. The idea to put them on her came to the mind of the famous American photographer Bert Stern, who took promotional photographs for the film. With Stern's light hand, many people began to associate heart-shaped glasses primarily with the image of Nabokov's heroine and only then with Madonna, who also had a weakness for heart-shaped glasses. It was them that the showbiz superstar chose for his 2008-2009 world tour called Sticky & Sweet. In our 21st century, it is, frankly speaking, hardly possible to create something completely new in eyewear design. So, we think, eyewear designers have no choice but to follow the path of modernizing existing forms. This means that our stories will certainly continue. * Let us remind our readers that for the first time aviator-shaped glasses appeared on the market under the Ray-Ban brand (literally its name can be translated as “protection from rays”, “obstacle to the passage of rays”). The manufacturer of these glasses was Bausch & Lomb. ** Before John Lennon, another wearer of round nickel-plated glasses became famous for his contribution to peace: Mahatma Gandhi, one of the most famous political figures of the 20th century and the father of the Indian nation. *** It’s interesting that Tura used anodized aluminum as the material for the glasses, the idea for which was borrowed from aircraft manufacturers. **** Albarello A., Joppolo F. For your eyes, only? Eyewear from A to Z. Modena: Logos, 2007. P. 39. ***** It is noteworthy that in the collection of the François Pinton Paris company, which is now headed by Robert Pinton’s son Francois Pinton, the model “Jackie O.” is still present today. The most important factor when choosing men's frames is comfort.
To choose a high-quality and practical version of men's frames , an ophthalmologist or optician will have to seriously try. It is necessary to conduct an examination of the orbit, identify vision problems, and then offer available options for consideration.
Great option for daily use
Key points to pay attention to include:
- The frame should be flexible and the distance between the ears sufficiently wide. The edge of the frame of the glasses should be held slightly in front of the face so that they do not touch and create discomfort.
- Make sure that you are comfortable wearing glasses and that they do not press or rub anywhere. The earpieces are of the correct shape, without flaws, and are rounded to fit perfectly on a man’s ears. Excessive pressure will become tiring over time.
- The folding mechanism should be chosen as practical as possible; the connections must meet reliability requirements so that the product does not deteriorate during long-term use and careless wear.
- Silicone nose pads will need to be tested and evaluated and will need to be adjusted individually. The wrong choice will affect the level of comfort, because the elements should not pinch the nose, rub or create pain.
Classic is always in trend
As noted above, the design in terms of quality must meet all criteria. So when choosing, move your head up and down, bend down and pick something up from the floor. While driving, make sure your glasses fit well on your face.
Men often choose the classic Clubmaster

A fresh take on the classic rectangular frame.
Not every man will choose this color combination. They look very original and interesting.
When choosing durable men's frames, consider not only plastic frames, but also metal ones. Today, brutal products made of stainless steel and even titanium are popular.

Durability increases significantly, so in most cases it is advisable to keep the frames and install new lenses in them. Among the disadvantages is the weight, which creates additional pressure on the temples.
By following these tips, you can easily buy men's glasses that will make you feel comfortable.
How to choose the right glasses frame: universal rules
A few universal rules for choosing glasses frames for everyone, regardless of face shape, eye color and skin type.
- The upper part of the frame should not rise above the eyebrows, and the lower part should not touch the cheeks;
- The frame should not be tight, otherwise the bow will put pressure on the nose and leave marks on it. Too wide, loose frames will cause glasses to constantly fall off your nose;
- The temples should not put pressure on the temples, otherwise wearing glasses will be accompanied by a headache;
- It’s better to buy a pair of glasses: this will allow you to change your look and will protect you if one of the glasses breaks or gets lost;
- Before purchasing, carefully inspect the frame to ensure it is free from deformation, cracks and scratches. Choose brands that have already proven themselves in this market.
If you have been prescribed glasses, you should not have any complexes about this, because they often become the accessory that favorably emphasizes the beauty of your face and becomes a wonderful addition to your image. The main thing is to know the basic rules of how to choose glasses frames and follow the fashion trends of different seasons that relate to wearing glasses.
